Papergirl Street Art Project Delivers Art Like The Morning News

Because police in Berlin are cracking down on wheatpasting more than ever, so in reaction, Berlin artist Aisha Ronniger has started a project that distributes art to the public in a different manner, via papergirl. The girls ride around on bikes with packs filled with prints rolled up, which they throw at unsuspecting pedestrians on the sidewalk.

Papergirl #3 from Papergirl on Vimeo.

uLiveandYouBurn Arrested

Last week I posted some of uLiveandYouBurn’s street monsters, turns out he got arrested for larceny and possession.

http://i.cdn.turner.com/trutv/thesmokinggun.com/graphics/art4/0612092inside1.jpgA North Carolina man is facing criminal charges for creating an amusing piece of public art from construction barrels. Joseph Carnevale, 21, was nabbed Wednesday after a Raleigh Police Department investigation determined that he was responsible for the work constructed May 31 on a roadway adjacent to North Carolina State University. Carnevale, was charged with misdemeanor larceny for allegedly building his orange monster from materials pilfered from a construction site. According to an arrest warrant, Carnevale “destroyed three road blocking barrels by cutting and screwing them together to form a statue.” Police estimated that Carnevale’s artwork caused $360 in damages to Hamlett Associates, the North Carolina construction company that owned the barrels. Carnevale is scheduled for a July 21 court appearance in Wake County.

He posted this on his blog:

If you don’t want to see anyone go to jail over the now infamous Barrel Monster, please call or send a letter to Wake County Prosecutor C. Colon Willoughby, Jr.

But is it Art? (Urban Scarecrow Edition)

img_5215I was on Passyunk near B2 when I found this. It looked like it used to be a scarecrow. Though I was very busy with important errands, I had to stop and think: is it art? Is it advertising? Art: it’s got painty lines on it. Ad: the painty lines spell out a web address. I didn’t want to get taken in by an ad, so I haven’t checked the site out. You can, if you want. I took some pictures and hope you guys can help me figure this out (went to liberal arts school & not real art school).

Here’s a bonus question: Who would do something as nefarious as defacing a park sign with crudely executed graffittos on paper? In front of a senior center? Won’t the old people get scared? I was a little scared, and I’m only 22. I hear that when you get older you get scared more because no one wants to fuck you. Or maybe it’s just that you have less to live for but that’s not really the point. The point is this:

What an ugly face!

What an ugly face!

Exhibit 2: Scarecrow’s face. It’s a pretty amateur rendition. As you can see below, it looks nothing like a human face.

Handsome!

Handsome!

Whoever drew Mr. Scarecrow’s face needs to go back to the drawing board!

No matter how aesthetically displeasing, however, no scarecrow deserves to have its face ripped off. So I put him back together.

Reunited and it feels so good!

Reunited and it feels so good!

That’s a happy scarecrow!

But is it Art? (Labor Rights Edition)

A girl.

A girl.

So. At this point it’s probably  obvious that I only leave the house to 1) Go to school/work on Temple’s campus and 2) Get drunk (no pictures then). Will get a real life soon for blog purposes.

This cutie caught my eye among the adverts on my way out of Temple’s cafeteria. I think this is art. It’s definitely art because she’s framed sorta off center; her bangs are nestled in that rule of thirds (of course I have no clue what I’m talking about, I’m an Anthro. major for chrissakes) hot spot. And it’s in black and white!

Either that or the people that sex ads in the back of our Alt-weeklies are stepping it up with some new let’s get in touch with the college market brand initiative.

A Bike

A Bike

Note the brake lever peeping on the the top of the picture.  Note the fork. I think this is a conceptual work. It’s meant to make us question why we install our bike forks like this:

bikeforkThis work has been really revelatory for me. Now I find myself questioning the hegemonic bike component ideologies propagated by the Religious Right/post Reagan (neo)conservatism.

I think I've been drinking too much.

I think I've been drinking too much.

I saw this pink guy (get ready to be surprised), on Temple’s campus. And I got really excited because I was listening to one of my own songs on the iPod and I started running after them; it was like being in my own music video something quirky all shots of skinny altboy chasing after some mysterious something, probably a girl.

The elephant in the room

The elephant in the room

And I said hi to, uh Brian. And Aly (?)

Did not really ask if I could take photos

Did not really ask if I could take photo

They’re members of Temple’s Student Labor Action Project (SLAP), an org I actually used to sort of be in before I decided to change the world through blogging/consumerism. (I kid)

Keeping in mind what they told me about why they were carrying this elephant around, I propose to name this one:

TUGSA and Temple’s Faculty are Still Working Without a Contract and are Sorta/Really Pissed About It.

That’s basically what they told me. Now, how does that come across during the big scary recession? Something tells me that the public isn’t really going to be very sympathetic towards unions asking for higher pay right now, as this open letter to SEPTA’s union demonstrates. Of course, it may just be Philly’s long standing resentment of SEPTA.

These quirky little pieces have two things going for them.

1. Man, it subverts all the social norms of flyering, man! Instead of offering a service/advertising jobs/a room with a phone number on the tear-off,  it apologizes!

2. They’re posted on doors, so you have to risk having someone open the door on you when you take a close look. This happened to me.

3. Possible suspect: Miranda July

Proof that Tyler School of Art is Indeed on Temple Main Campus

I ran into this giant stuffed squirrel (?) on the way back from J&H with Flip. He thinks it looks like Penn State’s Nittany Lion. Whatever it is, it seems to be slam-dunking a ball of tin foil.

Going Postal, A Collection of Sticker Art

Postal stickers have long been a preferred substrate used by street artists to get up. Of course, because stickers from the US Postal Service, UPS, DHL and FedEx are so readily available, most of these stickers get lost in the fray, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

That’s where graffiti photography legend Martha Cooper comes in. Shooting the origins of hip-hop and graffiti cultures since the late 1970s in New York City, and later all over the world, Cooper’s well-trained eyes know how to recognize deft sticker art. Here then is a collection of more than 200 photographs of some of Cooper’s favorite handmade postal stickers from around the world, done by some of the scene’s better-known artists and the anonymous.

Cooper has compiled a collection of photographs shot in numerous cities, including New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tokyo, Berlin and Amsterdam, featuring postal-sticker art created by FAUST, STAIN, C.DAMAGE, GET2, COSBE and many more.

Going Postal documents how an old-school method has burgeoned into another rich facet of the world’s graffiti cultures.
