Android Memories by Tomasz Kaluzny

This audio/visual experience comes from the  Photography portfolio of Tomasz Kaluzny.  Tomasz is based out of Lodz, Poland and more of his work can be found here.  These images are paired well together with the instrumental sound-scape they are accompanied with.  There is a stillness within the atmosphere, a sense of alienation that is easy to sympathize with.  The only catch here being that these images are supposed to be stills from a memory of an Android.  Without getting too caught up in the concept, I can safely say that the gelling of the two mediums is really well executed.  Check it out for yourself.

Urban Trying to Bring it Back with the Polaroids

URBAN-OUTFITTERS-POLAROID

A while ago, McJAWN staff photographers were lamenting about the death of Polaroids. Well… don’t cry, dry your eye, because here’s Urban Outfitters bringing back those fuzzy-instant-photo cameras. UO will offer 700 Polaroid kits that will include a pack of instant film and a Polaroid ONE600 camera the last instant film camera the company produced. They’ll be available for sale online on August 28th, so mark your calendars. I’m sure some of us here at McJAWN, will be happy to know that Polaroids are no longer a thing of the past.

Fallen Princesses

These works place Fairy Tale characters in modern day scenarios. In all of the images the Princess is placed in an environment that articulates her conflict. The ‘…happily ever after’ is replaced with a realistic outcome and addresses current issues.

The project was inspired by my observation of three-year-old girls, who were developing an interest in Disney’s Fairy tales. As a new mother I have been able to get a close up look at the phenomenon of young girls fascinated with Princesses and their desire to dress up like them. The Disney versions almost always have sad beginning, with an overbearing female villain, and the end is predictably a happy one. The Prince usually saves the day and makes the victimized young beauty into a Princess.

As a young girl, growing up abroad, I was not exposed to Fairy tales. These new discoveries lead to my fascination with the origins of Fairy tales. I explored the original brothers Grimm’s stories and found that they have very dark and sometimes gruesome aspects, many of which were changed by Disney. I began to imagine Disney’s perfect Princesses juxtaposed with real issues that were affecting women around me, such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

There are 2 more to be shot for this series which is going on exhibit on Oct. 15/09

OBEY x Martha Cooper

OBEY Clothing has collaborated with documentary photographer Martha Cooper to create a series of product including a skateboard, hat, bag and a range of T-shirts featuring Cooper’s photography. One of the photographs has been illustrated by Shepard Fairey and will be offered as a poster by www.OBEYGIANT.COM and a T-shirt and skateboard by OBEY Clothing

In Street Shots, opening January 16th at Subliminal Projects, her photos reveal the imaginative children of pre-renewal New York City as they mined the abandoned lots of the city to create toys from trash. Cooper, renowned for her graffiti and hip-hop pictures, brings those classic images together with ones depicting inner-city kids building forts from scrap, catching flies in cola bottles and racing homemade go-karts—all without adult supervision.

Martha Cooper Rules!

I came across this project on Jolis Paons’ Flickr. She made the whole dress out of phone book pages and photographed it. I’m impressed… now can someone re-make this dress out of fabric so I can wear it?

Paons says of the Paper Dress she designed and created for her Creative Processes class, “I pleated, stuck, sewed, and glued everything by hand.”
