MICHAEL JACKSON DIES OF HEART ATTACK AT 50!!

From tmz.com:

“We’ve just learned Michael Jackson has died. He was 50.

Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon at his Holmby Hills home and paramedics were unable to revive him. We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back.

A source tells us Jackson was dead when paramedics arrived.

Once at the hospital, the staff tried to resuscitate him but he was completely unresponsive.

We’re told one of the staff members at Jackson’s home called 911.

La Toya ran in the hospital sobbing after Jackson was pronounced dead.

Michael is survived by three children: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince “Blanket” Michael Jackson II.”

Pretty & Nice Tonight @ The M-Room

These lads in Pretty & Nice from Boston have yet to make much of a splash here in Philly, which is quite sad, being that they are pretty much fantastic. Crazy dissonant guitars, oddly catchy vocal lines, and dancey beats. I can’t reccomend this show more. Head over to the M-Room after Japanther if necessary, you won’t be disappointed. Listen Here

Speaking of Ripping People Off

Stolen from Takeshi Murata's website

Stolen from Takeshi Murata's website

Below, on McJawn’s blog, you can read a post showcasing the neat visuals of the new Chairlift video.Ā  Apparently, the technique used to make those big pixels (dropouts? compression artifacts? help me here) go from “shitty Direct TV” to “hey he made it look like shitty Direct TV” was invented by video artist Takeshi Murata. Shockingly, no one gave him credit for his work in developing and teaching the technique. In an email to Street Boners and TV Carnage, Kathy Grayson (who had shown one of Murata’s pieces in an exhibition called “Mail Order Monsters”, where Kanye first saw Murata’s work) writes:

[...]

The piece he copied is called PINK DOT. I think you can find it on his website or maybe on ratio 3 website (his gallery in SF).

Takeshi invented the technique of reprograming the way your computer reads video and compresses it to make the swirly pixel stuff you posted on your blog. It is not called ā€œroundaboutā€ or whatever your blog said, I mean maybe that is what Kanye calls it? Sounds retarded.

Takeshi is 31, RISD grad, and recently taught some seminars and posted some instructions on the technique so others have been figuring it out too I guess.

He has been doing this for 5+ years and is well known in (parts at least) of the artworld as the creator of this technique

He is really really bummed that both Kanye and Chairlift copied this technique with no credit to him, as he has invested years of his life creating it, and it would be awesome if you looked into his work and maybe re-structured your chronology on this a bit.

You don’t have to, I mean, artists get ripped off all the time. But I thought this information might be interesting to you.

(emphasis mine)(via SBTVC)

Which is funny because, as the hyperlinked “both Kanye…” clarifies, SBTVC had run a post accusing Chairlift of stealing the idea from Kanye. Now I’m reposting content that’s already up on another site.

But I’m not an artist. I know that in liberal arts college you can use other people’s work. When you do, you use citations (Diaz). We even have an organization (the MLA), actually something like three (APA and whoever is responsible for that “Chicago Style” foolishness) that deals with these sort of things, how citations are supposed to look on the page. I don’t really know about this stuff. Is, uh, using this technique that the guy taught without crediting him douchey, super douchey, or A.O.K.(I.)?

Alice D Inspired Music Videos?

What is up with bands and acid trip, or just trippy, music videos! In 2 MGMT Music videos (Electric Feel & Time to Pretend) there is some that are totally obvious, and now here comes Chairlift ( who were featured in one of those Ā I PodĀ commercials with one of their other catchy songs) check out the video for the song Evident Utensil. Make sure to use the HD option!

I did not really dig the song at first but then I could not get it out of my head and now I like it. Good luck not getting it stuck in your head!

Proud To Be An American: The Voyage North

l_a81a346f31e44ec18c7cfc05a62009ad

When I started blogging about things, I thought that it would be a great way to exercise an undue amount of cultural influence to promote the things I like. And I like the Voyage North (or, “Wolfdogbirdman and the Voyage North”). They are from “West Reading / Lancaster / Annapolis”, and as you can see in the photo above they are all very cute. This means that no matter what, they will be marketable, especially given the 1:1:girl:guy ratio. Or maybe that would be a 1:1:girl:guy:CUTIE ratio. Ā

Face It (Young and Dumb)

They made this video. I think it’s VHS, which is cool. w/ some kind of editing trickery (help me guys). I think it features shots of a West Philly venue where I saw them (Chernobyl). Either way, I think it’s rad, and that anyone that doesn’t have their head up MGMT/Dave P’s ass might think the same.

And that is why The Voyage North makes me proud to be an American.

What are you doing this Tuesday?

m_3bf15e63117347148d55971afc02ffddIt should probably involve these guys. Or, as an email sent out by Herbie Shellenberger (Brown Recluse Sings) puts it:

I’ve set up a real last minute spot for my buds from CA this coming Tuesday, March 31st. They’re on tour with Ariel Pink right now but have a few days off after it so they’re going to come play in Philly! Their band is called CRYPTACIZE and they’re from Oakland. I can’t sing their praises enough– they are one of the best and most original bands out there. They used to have a group called The Curtains; Nedelle used to put out solo albums on Kill Rock Stars; Chris played in Deerhoof from the albums Apple O to the Runners Four (aka their best stuff!). Have a listen to some of their tunes.

You should probably go to this.

Here’s what you need to know:

Daptronic

Daptronic is a solo acoustic performer from south jersey, and has been playing around Philly for about 6 months now, and before that performed in several local Philly bands. So he’s fresh to Philly but I see leaving a big mark on the Philly music scene. Listing to his music will send a good vibe through you. You just have to check it out and enjoy.

Is It Really 2009 Already?

I always tell myself that I’m going to try and compile a best of the year list at the end of every year, and I usually abandon it halfway through, on account of it being a completely disorganized mess. During the course of a year, I tend to acquire more music than I can even listen to and so I have a habit of missing out on albums I should probably be listening to. This year, I decided to take a different route and have compiled my favorite and most listened to albums of the year and apparently I’ve been listening to a lot of folk and Baltimore spazzpunk. So without further adieu, my top ten albums of the year:

10. Bonnie ā€˜Prince’ Billy – Lie Down in the Light
This should probably be way higher, but I haven’t gotten the chance to listen to it as much as I would have liked.
5. The Mae Shi – Hlllyh
If you’re going to make an eleven minute remix of all the songs on your album, you might as well stick it smack in the middle. I never really felt like it disrupted the flow of the record at all, and if it were the closing track it would most likely be overlooked. Dance party kicks in at 2:28. The whole album is pretty religious (they don’t really strike me as the god-fearing type), but it’s not in your face and easy to overlook if that kind of thing rubs you the wrong way. I’ve been a fan of the Mae Shi for awhile now, so I was psyched that I finally got the chance to see them this year when I was in Baltimore.
9. The Mountain Goats – Heretic Pride/ Black Pear Tree EP
John Darnielle had a busy year, releasing his third full length in four years, as well as two Eps. For me, The Sunset Tree and Get Lonely felt too produced for John. The songs on Heretic Pride feel more aggressive and emotional than the previous releases. I’ve been particularly fond of ā€œLovecraft in Brooklynā€ for awhile. Aesop Rock also does an awesome remix of this song. The line ā€˜I woke up afraid of my own shadow, like genuinely afraid. So I went down to the Pawn Shop, and bought myself a switchblade’ is classic Darnielle. It reminds me of my favorite line from Going to Georgia, ā€˜The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it’s you, and you’re standing in the doorway’. Also, make sure to check out ā€œThank You, Mario, but Our Princess is in Another Castleā€ from Black Pear Tree.
4. Mount Eerie – Black Wooden Ceiling Opening
This isn’t really a full length, but I think it deserves to be on the list anyway. I haven’t listened to Lost Wisdom enough to consider it yet.
8. The Death Set – Worldwide
I’ve seen the Death Set more than any other band this year, and they always killed it. Definitely one of my favorite bands of the year, in general.
3. TV on the Radio – Dear Science,
Awesome. Period.
7. Parts and Labor – Receivers
Not as good as Mapmaker, but still awesome.
2.Ponytail – Ice Cream Spiritual
The last Baltimore band on the list. I thought they killed it at Whartscape over the summer. I wish I had been able to see them when they came to Philly in August. I think it’d be hard to top the energy of seeing a Baltimore band in Baltimore, anyway. I liked Kamehameha more than Ice Cream Spiritual, but this album is still amazing.
6. Beach House – Devotion
Baltimore again, but representing the other side of the spectrum. I put this album on when I needed to chill out or take a nap.
1. Why? – Alopecia
I had almost forgotten that this album even came out in 2008, but even now, it still remains one of the most consistently played albums on my ipod/tunes/record player. The lyrics on Alopecia are much less surreal than Elephant Eyelash and Oaklandazulasylum, for better or for worse.

Honorable Mentions
  • Karl Blau – AM
  • High Places – High Places
  • Titus Andronicus – The Airing of Grievances
  • No Age – Nouns
  • Magnetic Fields – Distortion
  • Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles
  • Woods – Woods Family Creeps/Some Shame

I wasn’t feeling Woods Family Creeps as much as I was hoping I would, but the vinyl version is so beautiful (clear red vinyl!) that it’s worth buying for that reason alone. Some Shame (a tour-only cassette) is more reminiscent of At Rear House or How to Survive in the Woods. You can download it here.

  • Pocketknife – Tambourine Dream

A mixtape of dance remixes of indie/folk songs. Sweet. The illustrations on the vinyl are really well done and probably the main reason I bought it. I’m a huge sucker for that kind of thing. The cd version has 18 tracks, while the vinyl only has six.

I need to re-upload Worldwide and Hlllyh, so those albums are currently not able to be downloaded.

Jay-Z Ft. Santogold – Brooklyn Go Hard Typographic Video

Evan Roth, of The Graffiti Research Lab, went hard for his visual play on Jay-Z’s ā€œBrooklyn Go Hardā€ (featuring Santogold). For 5 years he’s been holding off requests to use the typographic illustration utilized in the video. He says for hopes Jay came calling. Well, it was RED and The Global Fund that called, but the effect remains the same. A stellar video for Hova’s newest track.

Gorillaz Starts Work on Third Album

Blur’s Damon Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett are set to begin work on a new Gorillaz album.

The pair also revealed that the release may see a new visual look for the animated band.

Damon Albarn stated that there would be no more Gorillaz albums last year, but has now told CBC that he has already begun work on the album.

“We’re doing another Gorillaz record,” explained the songwriter. “We came back from summer holidays and realized we could do exactly what we wanted to do with Gorillaz. Essentially, Jamie just had to agree to draw the characters again. ‘Cause I just do what I do anyway.”

“I’m so fucking bored of drawing those characters,” added Hewlett. “But then we had a moment where we had a new angle on it.”

“We’re not entirely certain [what it will be like]; we generally just go with our gut,” said Albarn. “I dunno. We are obtuse and quite abstract, really. We play a game but it’s not strictly the game. Sometimes it really works and sometimes… Actually, usually it really works.”

The Magnetic Fields are coming to the Merriam Theater on October 25th, show starts at 8PM. Tickets are available here, unfortunately the cheapest tickets are 32 dollars. However, I would definitely suggest going because Stephen Merrit’s band is really really cool.

Icarus Rising Visits Philly’s Indie Music Scene

Hello fellow McJawn users. My friend, Noah Siegel, a dedicated musician from Washington DC, is coming to town tonight to take a gander in what is quickly becoming a hotbed for indie musicians. Noah is a young musician with a drive for success who has played shows at World Cafe Live and is soon to play at the New York City Marathon. He is still just one of many lesser-known musicians who love to play in small, obscure concert venues. Philly has a variety of hip, underground music venues, which range from the large-scale stadium entertainment centers, (The Susquehanna Bank Center and the Tower), to smaller low-profile venues such as Dr. Watson’s, The Rotunda, and The Fire. These venues, though small, draw a large number of performers, a testimony to the thriving status of the Philadelphia independant music scene. Not one to do a half-assed job, Noah’s tour dates can be viewed online on the Icarus Rising website. Noah has also been written up in the online magazine, Undiscover Magazine and is gaining a fan base on the East Coast for what he terms a “music project,” Icarus Rising, which has recently produced a new album, Amorphous, and came to Dr. Watson’s, a hip in-the-know venue that holds shows in the black-walled room on their second floor. If you would like to hear some great indie music, check out the crowd-drawing Trocadero or the smaller, grungier concert venue, The Fire, which recently had a show by Dr. Dog. If you’re really in the know, you might be able to find some of the hidden venues, which are in even more off-the-wall, hush-hush locations. I can’t even remember their names.

Among Criminals

Among Criminals is a politically-charged Reggae, Latin-Rock band. Among Criminals is Jarrod Pedone on the drums, Bean with the bass and Ryan Gaughan is the vocals. They put on amazing shows which are always full of energy, fun and entertaining. There’s never a boring moment with these great dudes. Their new album, “Happy History” is out. Check them out on Myspace.

Last week, I went to go see Among Criminals performing at the World Live Cafe. As soon as I got there, they started to get on stage. Tickets sold out as soon as I was up to get my ticket. I normally would’ve called Bean to get me in but since he was on stage, I was shit out of luck. Then my best friend, Geo, decided he had to get me in, no matter what. He pulled Bean off stage and he came and put me & Tyler on the guestlist. Not only did we get to see them perform, we got in for free! Bean & Geo are the best dudes ever.

I promised them I would upload the videos and post them here but it took about 4 hours to upload each video. Sorry it took so long guys! Also ignore the one part where Jack tells me to, “Hurry up and take the picture.” He didn’t know I was filming HAHAHHA.

There are a bunch of videos of other performances from different events I have yet to upload. They’re coming soon!

brief intro-
hi everyone, this is amy li, fellow photographer of the mcjawn fam. anyways, i was in williamsburg (AKA hipster HQ) this past sunday for a free black lips show that was being held at mccarren park pool. honestly, i wasn’t expecting anything outrageous to happen (big mistake) and lately, i’ve been getting lazy about carrying a heavy camera with me everywhere (HUGE mistake)..sooooooo, here are some poor quality canon powershot pictures from a really serious photography major.

enjoy :B

ps. i do not believe in capitalization.

for those who missed out on sunday’s free BLACK LIPS and DEER HUNTER show in williamsburg, brooklyn.. don’t expect this post to be about them because it’s not.

this is king kahn touching his man bits, taken just SECONDS before he whipped it out

this is king kahn mooning us (deerhunter was playing)

this is king kahn in drag

this is king kahn and his make believe fruit (?) balls (black lips was performing)

this is a shitload of toilet paper flying around

to make things short+simple,
the show was fun. music wise, some of the bands that played were..meh. but that king kahn dude is insane and made it worth while.
