Polaroid Instant Film Camera Re-launched

Following the widely publicized death of Polaroid film, it appears as the brand (alongside the recent appointing of Lady Gaga as creative director) will re-visit its iconic range of instant film cameras. With a ressurgence in film as of late, perhaps Polaroid will once again re-create the realm of instant film photography. The cameras will take on a retro aesthetic with a reliance on Polaroid 1000 film. A release date is slated for later this year with cameras set below the $100 USD mark.

McJAWN Goes to 2009 CMJ

Words and Photos by Edgar Alan Dough

CMJ in New York is like all the things that make Philly better rolled up into one week – long lines, industry dickheads, overzealous scenesters and 7-dollar beers. But that didn’t stop McJAWN for stepping out and getting in on the action. Here’s a rundown of the things we saw, heard, and _______________

Speaking In Code | a Documentary film by Amy Grill

SiC_PosterWebDescribed by the film makers as “a human movie about computer music”, Speaking In Code is about the techno scene across the world, and more-so about the people involved. Amy Grill and her husband, David Day live in Boston, where David is trying to ignite a fire in the Red Sox Nation, hoping to turn them into bass thumping club-going techno-heads. As hilarious as this premise sounds, it’s actually not. His struggles to transform his home-town are cut together with other stories of come-up and struggle in lands where techno does reign supreme. In Germany, the film follows dudes like Modeselektor, and The Wighnomy Brothers (apparently they are famous), and journalist-ternt-DJ Philip Sherburne in Barcelona. The movie’s pretty entertaining thanks to the characters, but much like the music it documents, too often over-the-top and self indulgent.

Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy4uqwSxwfE

Bananas! | a Documentary film by Fredrik Gerttenbananas_poster02_large

A deeply disturbing and fucked-up tale of a lawsuit filed by the workers of Nicaragua against Dole Food Company over pesticides used at the banana fields causing sterility in the workers. In the second poorest nation in The Americas, agriculture work is the main source of employment, so when it was found out that Dole’s pesticides cause sterility, the number of affected men was in the thousands. Bananas! follows LA-based ambulance chasing lawyer, Juan Dominguez, as he preps the case, rallies the plaintiffs, and cruises down Sunset in his red Ferrari. The characters are rich, and the story is heartbreaking. Though, loose ends and the world’s inability to ever really get retribution for wrongs done by big corporations, ultimately makes it a dissatisfying film, unfortunately.

Better Recognize Showcase | @ BB Kings

After standing in line for long enough to start talking to the police horses that make Times Square smell like the petting zoo at TKTKT Philly’s Zoo, the show, put on by Nah Right and OnSmash.com began. The first act we caught was Stalley, who was joined by Mickey Factz. The up-and-comer spit some knowledge-laden lyrics and put on a dope show for an opening act. Then came the main attraction for the night for many, young Atlanta trap-star Pill. After rocking the shit out of some new joints, bringing out Gary, Indiana’s own Freddie Gibbs, and delivering two renditions of his Pink City anthem, “Trap Goin’ Ham”, he left the stage a considerable amount more crunked than when he arrived.

A couple more dynamic duos followed afterward, Kidz in the Hall and Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y. Consequence followed with a short set, and brought out young Mr. Cudi, who proclaimed (as he usually does), “I’m wasted!!!” as he got the mic to perform “Make Her Say” and “Sky Might Fall”. What was supposed to be the highlight of the night was Gucci Mane protege and frequent money-getter, OJ Da Juiceman. But even as Miss Info was introducing him with lavish praise, the bridge-n-tunnel crowd was getting their Silky Johnson on (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Dzxef1muoQ). Even his biggest hit, “Make The Trap Say Aye”, couldn’t save him, and he was booed the entire 15 minutes he was on stage. Tragic.

The headliners did their damn thing. Rae, the supreme coke commander of the Wu-Tang Clan, ran through classics like “C.R.E.A.M.” and bangers off his new classic album like “Catalina”. Scratchy voice and all, dude still puts on a dope show. The homies from Yonkers also tore through LOX classics like “Money, Power, Respect” as well as solo cuts, like “Blow My Mind”, and “I Get High”. Too bad all that dope hip hop couldn’t make the hate in the room dissipate. Give love a chance, guys.

Philadelphia… We’re Prepared!

http://media.philly.com/images/on-pgrease21-a.jpgCity workers have greased poles along South Broad Street in an effort to deter revellers from climbing them during any wild celebrations that might follow a possible Phillies victory tonight.

Street lights, signs, bus shelters and even trees have been coated by a yellowish goo that bears a resemblance to petroleum jelly.

Temporary “No Stopping” signs also have been posted along the thoroughfare warning motorists they could be cited for a violation for stopping between 5:30 p.m and midnight.

Hoping to prevent the damage and looting that followed last year’s World Series victory, police are expected to be out in force tonight if the Phillies clinch the National League title.

At Robinson Luggage, which was looted last year, manager Kevin Roemer said Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey had assured Broad Street merchants there would be a stepped up police presence.

“We’re feeling confident about what the police are going to do,” said Roemer, adding the store was taking no special precautions.

“I’m a big Phillies fan,” said Roemer, who, like much of the region has a touch of Phillies fever. “I want to see a repeat. It would be great for the city.”

“If we beat the Yankees [in the World Series] I have no idea what the celebration would be like,” he added, imagining what is not yet a certainty.

Wooooo

numberfives

Wooooo is insane.  I really can’t describe how funny it is, so I’m not even going to try.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, Wooooo Magazine is an interview mag put out every so often by Jason Crombie and his crew and they interview some pretty rad people like they’ve never been interviewed before.  Who else has the nerve to ask David Byrne “Has a girl ever been put off by your hairy arms?”  Or compile an entire interview with Jerry Hsu in rhyme – all about how his cat ran away.  My description is probably not doing it for you.  You just need to get your hands on a copy.  I’m sure you’ll be able to devour it in less than a day.  It’s almost disappointing how quick you’ll read it because it will leave you wanting more, like now.  I think they’re working on putting out a new issue soon – well at least I hope they are – although most likely not as soon as I’d like it.  Which is like now.

Anyway, in between issues you can still be amused by Crombie on his blog, which he updates almost everyday (unless he’s like way too hung-over).  So go add it to your Google Reader feed – like now.

Megabus

iheartmegabusBeing a Chinatown bus Century 2000 regular, it gets pretty frustrating dealing with such ghettoness. Especially leaving from New York to Philly, when I do get the chance to go back home, I first arrive on Canal St and then get harassed by those aggressive Chinatown bus ladies with them screaming in my ear, “Where you go!?” The buses are also pretty unpredictable when they relocate their spots every three months or so. What’s worst is that there buses usually smells of piss or something really foul. And I always end up with a broken chair. Now, all the Chinatown bus companies have some pretty mean competition. I didn’t believe it at first when my friends, who also did the NY to Philly commute every weekend, told me that they would ride to New York for only $1.50, sometimes. The ride back from Philly to New York would be only $3.50. That’s amazing! Especially since Chinatownb bus company, Century 2000, just raised their prices from $10 to $12 for a one way fare.

Philly Bike-Crazed!

Philly is going bananas over bikes, and no, we’re not just talking about banana-seated bikes… we’re talking about bikes, bikes, bikes!!! I haven’t seen a huge attempt from the city to promote the biking efforts, perhaps it’s because the city has been losing money off of tickets for traffic and parking violations. I got nearly over a $1,000 in fines for being the driver of a passenger, who accidentally littered a can on 9th and Snyder, when it could’ve all been avoided if I was just riding my bike that night. Tell me, that’s not the city being desperate.

Anyway, McJAWN is in support of this new awesome wave of bicycle love. I’m in love with my vintage Royce Union with the metal basket on the front. My Dad loves it too. For are you slow-riders, like myself, my only advice is beware of the Mexican gangsters between 10th and 6th Street on Washington Ave, I would get harassed and chased after late at night with some guy calling me “Mamasita!” At least they’re not nearly as bad as the Vietnamese hair-gelled fobs in their Honda Civics, riding along beside me asking me, “Hey Bab-beeeee, can I give you ride?” Like are you serious? I’m just trying to ride my bike home.

Anyway, I’ve checked out all the cool things happening in Philly, gearing towards this cool movement of bike love. Check it out.

What He Did To Get His Ass LOCKED Up

And he will wear the same Superbowl ring that all the other Eagles will be wearing at the end of this season.

And you say you´r a vegitarian because you love animals so much. Are you aware how many animals that get killed when farmers harvest the crops? Animals lovers can be so extreme that they end up hating and doing more damage than the people they target and blaim. Animal abuse is wrong yes. Not the point here.

Philadelphia Native, R.I.P. DJ AM

aoki-dj-am4

This 36-year-old Philadelphia native, DJ AM, is now gone. He’ll be terribly missed. After surviving the plane crash last year, it all seems like a final destination moment, perhaps it was his time to go. DJ AM was found dead at his $2 million SOHO apartment from a drug overdose. Cops found him lying face-up and shirtless. They also found a crack pipe and some prescription drugs in his residency.

To read more about his death click here.

I can’t even begin to describe to you how devastated I am to see DJ AM go. He was part of my life, after high school, growing up in New York. I was young, new to the whole club and hipster scene. Me and my friends who’ve I just met from orientation at FU would end up at some over-exaggerated loft party where DJ AM or Steve Aoki was djing. Yeah reminiscing of those exciting-yet-kinda-scary rainy fall nights in the lower east side, of course, at first I thought it was kinda lame that DJ AM was heading these parties, after all, he did lose some credibility by dating TV reality star, Nicole Richie, but after being to more-than-a-few of his parties, including the one while he was on the Barcardi B-Live tour, he was an awesome DJ. Mad propz. R.I.P. DJ AM.

We Make Magazines

wemakemagazinesAn explosion of independent magazines, not quite zine-like, has hit home in Philly. If you’ve walked into any local coffee shop, these magazines are usually stacked pile-high in the corner next to those dying plants. Indie mags are still experimenting and cultivating the future trends in the magazine game, yet not risking all of the traditional mag approach. McJAWN is an independent magazine, but because we have no money, we don’t do print. However, we still deliver the same quality you can find in print media. Our staff spends the same amount of time researching and developing their articles. It’s inspiring to see other magazines doing the same. I just got this book and I think it’s worth looking at if you’re interested in starting up your own indie mag.

We Make Magazines explores magazine culture and celebrates the energy and visual dynamite that can be found outside the publishing mainstream. Edited by passionate magazine connoisseurs, it features exclusive interviews with international experts and illustrates the diverse topics that are fundamental to magazine publishing. While showcasing more than 100 independent magazines from 30 countries around the globe with stunning spreads and layouts, it also includes a directory to over 700 of the most cutting-edge independent magazines. We Make Magazines is an essential read for everyone with a passion for print.

Urban Trying to Bring it Back with the Polaroids

URBAN-OUTFITTERS-POLAROID

A while ago, McJAWN staff photographers were lamenting about the death of Polaroids. Well… don’t cry, dry your eye, because here’s Urban Outfitters bringing back those fuzzy-instant-photo cameras. UO will offer 700 Polaroid kits that will include a pack of instant film and a Polaroid ONE600 camera the last instant film camera the company produced. They’ll be available for sale online on August 28th, so mark your calendars. I’m sure some of us here at McJAWN, will be happy to know that Polaroids are no longer a thing of the past.

Tying Up Loose Ends With Ron Crawford

ronfromubiqRead the latest interview with Ron Crawford at Phrequency.com. Every time I’m away in New York, I always miss out on all the drama back home in Philly. I guess I’m the last one to get the news that Ron was terminated from Ubiq. Apparently Ron left because the owner of Ubiq, John Lee, became a money sucking vampire. What a bitch, we all know and love Ron. Not only was he the awesome friendly manager of Ubiq, but he was an official Philly socialite. He was always spotted at all the local scenestur parties and you could also find him talking to some-big-name at all the exclusive events. And I was right afterall, Ron was in Ninjasonik’s “Somebody Gonna Get Pregnant” video.  Well now Ron is touring with Sneaker Pimps, hopefully, he’ll be back in Philly soon. We’ll love to have him back.

The Strangeness: Unknown Preggers and Baby-Nipple-Suckers

bebeglotonThis week has been a disturbing week for me. Just Thursday, my co-worker brought up the absurd topic of women going into labor without knowing they were pregnant. I mean, you have to be pretty “big” to begin with, to not know you’re 8 months preggers. And seriously when did contractions became the equivalent pain as diarrhea cramps? I guess some girls got it really easy, so easy as if pregnancy is just another walk in the park. Fuck.

But this morning, I get this crazy text message about a breast-feeding doll. Apparently, a Spanish toy-making company, Berjuan, decided to launch a new doll that makes slurping sounds as the baby is supposedly sucking on nipples. The company designed a special halter top that has a daisy flower covering the girl’s nipple that can be unbuttoned when feeding the doll and re-buttoned afterward, sick. I don’t know if these types of toys should be sold at the local Toys-R-Us, I think it should be sold at the local Spencer… Baby-Nipple-Sucker would be a perfect gift for a friend who has man-bobbies. What kinda girly-man, doesn’t like his nipples sucked?

Philly Cyclist Who Shot At Kids Charged With Attempted Murder, etc.

As one may expect, the cyclist/idiot named Joseph James DePaul Jr was arrested as a result of what transpired between himself and two underage kids on Schuylkill River Trail. DePaul, who not only shot six rounds at two underage kids who allegedly kicked him off his bike, but also then went home and called in the incident to police (did he really think he was in the right?) has been arrested and charged with with two counts each of attempted murder, voluntary and involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment.

Apparently he didn’t think it was illegal to carry a gun in a public park (it isn’t) or shoot it at kids (unecessary force).

Either way, as a result of the incident, Patrols are now expected to police the trail in order to discourage any similar incidents.

Woman from Russia breaks her own record by lifting 31 pounds….with her vagina

Tatiana Kozhevnikov, World’s Strongest Vagina

from mosnews:

A Russian woman has set a new world record, lifting a 14-kg. glass ball with her vagina muscles. Tatiata Kozhevnikova ofNovosibirsk, aged 42, has been exercising her intimate muscles for fifteen years, and has already made her entrance into the Guinness Book of Records as the possessor of the world’s strongest vagina, she proudly told Life.ru.

“After I had a child, my intimate muscles got unbelievably weak. I read books on Dao and learned that ancient women used to deal with this problem using wooden balls,” she said. “I looked around, saw a Murano glass ball and inserted it in my vagina. It took me ages to get it out!”

Pennsylvania State Jobs Now Provide Health Benefits For Same Sex Couples

As of July first, Pennsylvania took a large step forward in what many see as a continuing battle for equal rights for same sex partners by extending health coverage to the partners of state retirees and state employees. Under the new law, the partners and dependent children of state employees will be treated exactly the same way as spouses, including medical, prescription, dental, vision and hearing. This act is one that Governer Ed Rendell adamantly supports, saying that such a measure was “long overdue.” (more…)
