Q: Can you tell us a bit about your childhood?
I was a lot shorter and I was convinced that adults were actually smart. Boy was I wrong.

Q: Where do you live?
Philadelphia PA…for now.

Q: Can you tell us briefly about your working method?

Q: Where do you source your materials?
Lumber yard, Art Supply Store, Hardware Store

So we recently had the pleasure to chat with Dewey Saunders and discuss his work and up and coming show “Sunset Season”

1. So clue us in on your solo show “Sunset Season”.

Sunset Season is my first solo show, and it is basically a culmination of all the different ways I make pictures. I have been so busy- there are 30 + mixed media pieces featured, all made very recently. The most prevalent themes are expansion of the mind and the work is really meant to uplift using an aesthetic that is pretty psychedelic with a lot of vintage sources, taken from magazines and books printed in the 60’s and 70’s.

2. What mediums have you been working with for this exhibition?

There are collages, watercolor paintings, and mixed media pieces that incorporate paint, collage, pen, pencil, and vellum.

3. How do you come up with the concepts for some of your work?

A lot of these pieces are loosely based on the psychedelic experience, there are a lot images of huge explosions of images coming out of heads, simulating what it feels like to “blow your mind.”

Basically I have been fascinated with the whole Haight-Ashbury love revolution that Ken Kesey and the Merry Pransksters helped develop through the use of LSD and pretty much destroying the status quo of the 1950’s version of reality. An interest in Eastern religion was sparked in the same time period, and a lot of ideas of the Tao Te Ching and Zen Buddhism are incorporated into my work. The fluidity of nature, the every changing patterns of matter, can be perceived through spiritual means such as yoga and meditation, then all of a sudden there was this new alchemy of psychedelics that have always been around in some form; but I think that time period was really pivotal in American culture because it was such a creative blast of energy.
I was really into Jack Kerouac and the Beatnik writers, and I loved how Neal Cassady was somehow part of both movements. I love to read so a lot of visual ideas are taken from books in a way, I interested in really far out channeled texts, Buddhism, 2012 speculations and basically entertain some very wild ideas about reality and try to understand what the heck is going on.

4. Are there any artist that currently inspire your works?

The artists that have been really inspiring me lately are Jeffrey Decoster, Josh Cochran, Cody Hudson, Misaki Kuwai, Leanord Baskin, Barry Blitt, Joe Ciardello, Sam Weber, Zach Gibson, Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Mike Perry, Damien Correl, and Eduardo Recife.

5. Are there any rituals that you practice while working, such as listening to music drinking coffee etc.?

Music is a huge part of the process, it is basically the soundtrack to what is happening.
A couple albums that have been on steady loop are Ariel Pink’s Before Today, Dice Raw’s new mixtape Dice Dilla Pregunta (which I happened to do the cover for), Broken Social Scene’s Forgiveness Rock Record, and the new Flying Lotus, Cosmogramma. Another ritual would be worshipping the sun from roof before getting started, and concentrating my huge mandala in my studio that was handcarved by one my best friends, Chad Lassin. You know, I’ll light a stick of Nag Champa and get irie.

6.Do you have any vices?

My only vice is double sided tape.

7. Where are your originally from and what brings you to Philly?

I am originally from South Florida, and moved to PA when I was 10. I went to Tyler School of Art which was not exactly in the city but close enough to become involved with the scene here.
I moved to Philly after I met Rick Friedrich and Fabian Thompson AKA Akilles; started to record music with them , and then moved in to the Pork Fried Mansion. I am here to spread light.

9. What comes to mind when you hear the word “JAWN”

Like jawnie jawn? Jawndice.

10. What are your words to live by?

There is a phrase collaged on my desk that I reference at times of uncertainty.
“ Do your work and step back, the only path to serenity.”

It’s widely known Mike Giant is an avid bike rider, so it makes sense he’d collaborated with Cannondale to produce this one-of-a-kind Cannondale x Mike Giant Graffiti Bike. It is available now for bidding via eBay to support the Bahati Foundation.

The Bahati Foundation was founded in 2009 by the 2008 National Pro Criterium Champion and eight-time national champion, Rahasan Bahati and is focused on empowering inner-city youth through cycling, education, and music.

The Cannondale x Mike Giant Graffiti Bike features urban-inspired aesthetics provided by Mike Giant, and is a Cannondale SuperSix HI MOD frame/fork, 54cm, with Shimano Di2 drive train, custom Shimano Dura Ace wheels, PRO Vibe carbon bars, stem & set post, Fizik Aliante saddle, and Continental Grand Prix 4000 tires, just like the Bahati Team issue bikes.

The bike will be awarded to its new owner on the final day of the AMGEN Tour of California, May 23, 2010. The AMGEN Tour of California is the largest cycling event in America, and is a Tour de France-style cycling road race, presented by AEG, that challenges the world’s top professional cycling teams to compete along a demanding course from May 16-23, 2010.

100% of proceeds from the auction of the Cannondale X Mike Giant Graffiti Bike will go to The Bahati Foundation’s GIVEBACK programs which work to inspire youth through the sport of cycling.
