Pennsylvania State Jobs Now Provide Health Benefits For Same Sex Couples

As of July first, Pennsylvania took a large step forward in what many see as a continuing battle for equal rights for same sex partners by extending health coverage to the partners of state retirees and state employees. Under the new law, the partners and dependent children of state employees will be treated exactly the same way as spouses, including medical, prescription, dental, vision and hearing. This act is one that Governer Ed Rendell adamantly supports, saying that such a measure was “long overdue.”
The measure was voted for back in September and passed with relative ease. The communications Director of the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund mentioned that the move was only logical, stating that many employers already offer their workers such benefits, and it only seemed natural to extend Pennsylvania state employee benefits as well in order to stay competitive. Eleigibility is based upon age (18 years) and proof of such a relationship, whether through a joint bank account or power of attorney that lives are intertwined
